Idleb Specialized Surgical Hospital Prevents Forearm Amputation for War-Injured Patient
A 24-year-old patient visited Idleb Specialized Surgical Hospital to treat a war injury in his right forearm. The injury had caused bone loss of the ulna (more than 5 cm) while the neurovascular structure was intact.
After admission, the patient was firstly given first aid by the medical staff, and then four months later, he was prepared for vascularized bone grafting, from the fibula bone of the leg, and through a front entrance of the ulna.
The performed operation included bone and vascular surgeries, and they were successfully conducted. Thus, the amputation of the patient’s forearm was avoided, and he was discharged of the hospital four days later seeing his generally improved condition and health, thanks to Allah.
It is worth noting that vascularized bone grafting is considered one of the effective solutions in case of large bone losses.
